Mount Veeder Winery is a California wine producer located, surprisingly, on Mount Feeder in the Napa Valley. It is known for its acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon wines and blends of Bordeaux grape varieties. The estate was purchased by Michael and Arlene Bernstein in the early 1960s with its inaugural vintage in 1973. The vineyards were the first on Mount Veeder.
The vineyard was one of the first in the Napa valley to be planted to all five Bordeaux varieties and the first to plant Petit Verdot The Bernsteins were also driving forces behind the establishment of the Mount Veeder AVA in 1993. The 1984 vintage was a very good one for the wines of California.
Typical Blend, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, but may have a little Franc, merlot to Petit Verdot in it. 75cl bottle. Abv 13%
Bottle condition, capsule good, label good, wine level base of neck.
Tasting Note 14/03/2017 - 94 Points
Nose: plum, blackberry, sage and leather with hints of hot sandy soil. Palate: Enters with Plum and Bruised Strawberry fruit, then dried blackberry notes and tobacco. Acidity and Minerality are featured, giving balance to leather, green pepper and sage notes. Finish: Moderate with plum fruit and minerally stone notes.
Fruit was a bit darker than the last bottle, but it also had more time to open up. This shows far more old world, and would be at home in a lineup of 70's/80's bordeaux. I also think the terroir of Mt. Veeder is expressed nicely in this wine. Drink these up as they are in a great place right now, and should hold on plateau for a few more years.
