About the wine
The name derives from granite known as Ironstone which litters many vineyards in the McLaren Vale. Much was removed in the late 1880's and used for some of the d'Arenberg buildings. 1993 was a mixed vintage, but many good red wines were produced.
Typical blend, Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre. 75cl bottle. Abv 15%
Bottle condition, cap good, label good, wine level in neck
Tasting Note 24/02/2024 -93 Points
Cork disintegrated, carefully double decanted. Medium to dark ruby with a faded watery rim, still really quite dark considering its age. Fully developed nose, reminiscent of a smoky charcoal grill, roasted meat, some shrivelled black olive. The palate is still very elegant, still actually a lot of fruit there (in contrast with the nose), alongside earthier notes and boiled sweets. Finishes reasonably long, and again with that charcoal grill/meaty note. 1993 is my birth vintage and it was almost universally poor in Europe but this is still super enjoyable - saved by the antipodeans.
