Chateau Le Gay Vintage 1986

There are 10.5 hectares (26 acres) of vines in one holding, planted on clay and gravel soils in the north of the Pomerol plateau. Some 90 percent of plantings are Merlot, with the remainder Cabernet Franc. The 1986 vintage was very good for the region and the wider Bordeaux.

Medium to dark garnet colour, heavy sediment. Good, intense red and dark fruit, red currant, red cherry, blueberry, blackberry, plum, meaty notes, chocolate, tobacco, complex spice notes, and light herbaceous notes, with pronounced acidity, partly resolved tannin, and great persistence. Kept developing. Needed an hour in a decanter to show its best, and was consistent on day two. Medium-bodied, and well-structured, with good concentration and very good complexity. That said, the tannin is lightly sandpapery and lightly dry, and the wine remained a little rustic over the course of both days. Should smooth out with another three to five years. Pair it with a steak for now. 92.
