Batailley was bought in 1932 by the brothers François and Marcel Borie, who divided it in two in 1942 to avoid conflict in inheritance. François took the smaller property that did not include the physical château and named the estate Haut-Batailley. He increased the size of the estate by buying vineyards, including purchases of plots in 1951 from the Fourth Growth Chateau Duhart Milon. The weather gods smiled on the wine world helping the millennium vintage to be an excellent one for Pauillac and the wider region. I remember buying a case of this en premier after the late Clive Coates described this as the best Haut Batailley produced since the 1961.

Typical blend, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot. 75cl bottle Abv 12%

Bottle condition, capsule good, label goos, wine level in neck

A perfect fill and a perfect cork, so pristine condition. Much better than I thought it would be - silky red fruit, mainly red cherry and redcurrant, quite persistent too, very enjoyable. HB is often an atypical Pauillac, so no surprise, but this has none of the characteristics one would expect, which is the only drawback. Probably not for the long haul, but good for the next few years.
