Chateau De Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Vintage 2005

Château de Beaucastel has long been considered one of the great wines of France. It is unanimously renowned for its balance, elegance and ageing potential. Beaucastel has an extraordinary terroir at the Northern end of the appellation with heavy exposure to the Mistral. All 13 varieties of the appellation grapes have been organically grown here since the sixties. The 2005 vintage was excellent for the wines of the Rhone Valley.

Typical blend Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre plus a small portion of 10 other varieties. 75cl bottle. Abv 14%

Bottle condition capsule excellent, label excellent, wine level high fill

Opened 3 hours before serving. Primary deep ruby. Powerful, serious aromas of black fruit and anise. Medium body but seems densely packed. Ripe blackberry, surging black licorice, outstanding acidity, great minerality, pliant but very firm tannins. This just kept improving for as long as the bottle lasted. A classic Mourvèdre-based Chateauneuf in a “pre global warming” mold. Outstanding wine that should be with us for a few more decades.
