About the wine

Château Citran is a large estate in the commune of Avensan, producing wine under the Haut Medoc appellation.  It is one of the older properties in the Medoc, with its history dating back to the 1200s, when it was a fortified stronghold. The Donissan de Citran family ran the estate from that time until 1832.Château Citran's current owners, the Merlaut family, took over in 1996. The 2005 vintage was fantastic across Bordeaux.

Tasting Note 21/02/2026 -90 Points

Still a deep garnet colour. 50/50 Cabernet and Merlot. Slight nose, light cassis, touch of summer fruits, touch of fresh tea leaves in the caddy, very subtle tobacco is just perceptible. Better flavour, opens up nicely after a 2 hour decant, resolved fruit, just starting in the red fruit spectrum which is what I like in most Bordeaux. Some tannins showing, like many from this vintage. Mid weight, balanced and mellow, simple fruit typical of this level in Bordeaux. As it approaches 3 hours open the fruit develops more intensity but the tannin become more pronounced as well. It is early in its maturity but I doubt it will improve with further age though it will certainly last. Best at 2 hours.
