Organising wine tastings is something that I have loved doing over the years. The three main types being :-
Vertical - A run of several wines of different vintages from the same estate.
Horizontal - Same vintage different wines, often from the same region or country.
Grape Exploring - Different wines from different grape varieties.
There are many other variations, but I don't want to write a list!
One of the most amazing verticals I organised was of Chateau Cissac, Bordeaux, Haut Medoc. I had chosen this as it is one of my favourite wines and recent vintages are relatively easy to get hold of.
Over a period of a couple of years I managed to put together 30 different vintages from 1970 onwards. Not a complete run. Some vintages just aren't out there any more.
It was a fascinating evening with wines of up to 40 years old showing well and vintages considered lesser, think 1976 or 1984, performing surprisingly well. The assembled group really enjoyed the experience and the fact that they could taste a discernible difference in the wines.
Now 30 was an extravaganza and the ideal is probably 6 wines. A nice number and a little easier and quicker to source and organise, but still fascinating.
